The recent apps are cleared when the phone is closed and reopened.

When you hold for long to put the top button on top of the Wave, right, you get the recent app. Correct? Okay. When you shut the phone, it means that you flip the phone closed and you flip it back open. When you close the phone, the recent app just gets cleared.

Currently, that is only available for the new phones that were purchased after Thursday. But the other phones will get an update that includes Android Auto within a month.
